What is Home site?


Home site is the hub of your intranet, or you could say it is the main site or landing page for the whole SharePoint intranet. Home site lets you search across the tenant for sites, documents, and news. You can also set up a Viva connection dashboard on home sites, which gives you quick and easy access to information and work-related tasks. Users in certain roles, markets, and job functions can see content on the Dashboard that is made just for them. With the Viva connection app, you can add your home site to MS Teams. This lets you access your intranet from MS Teams. You can also get to your home site from the home button on the SharePoint mobile app, which is another benefit of making a home site. so you can carry your intranet around with you.

Steps to create a Home site

  1. login to your tenant and click on the app launcher from the top left.
  2. Click 'Admin' to navigate to Microsoft 365 admin center.


  3. From the left navigation, click '... Show all'.


  4. Scroll down to 'Admin centers' and click 'SharePoint'  


  5. On the SharePoint Admin centre, click 'Settings' from the left navigation. 


  6. Select 'Home site' setting from the 'Settings'.


  7. On the right pane provide the URL of the site that you want to use as Home site.

  8. Click save, it may take some time to reflect.
  9. To check that the site is converted into the Home site, navigate to the site.
  10. On the site, click on the gear icon from the top right.
  11. You will see two new options 'Global navigation' and 'Manage Viva Connections'. Also if you will check the search bar it should allow you to search throughout the tenant.


  12. All of these modifications indicate that the site has been transformed into a home site.

Benefits of Home Site:
  1. Home sites provide throughout the tenant search.
  2. Home sites can be added to Microsoft Teams using Viva connection app.
  3. Home site's navigation can be set as global navigation which can be accessed from anywhere on the tenant.
  4. Home site can be accessed from the SharePoint mobile app.
Notes:

  1. Only one site on a tenant can be set as a home site.
  2. A home site can be a hub site but can not be associated with another hub site.
  3. For your home site to serve as the root site, or top-level site, of your intranet, you must first replace the root site with the site.
